About Therapeutic Exercise & Movement

Our therapeutic exercise programs are carefully designed to address your specific physical limitations and help you achieve optimal function and performance.

We prescribe a range of exercises targeting flexibility, strength, endurance, balance, and coordination, all tailored to your unique needs and rehabilitation stage.

Each exercise plan progresses systematically to challenge your body appropriately while ensuring safety and effectiveness. Regular reassessment allows us to modify your program as your condition improves.

Therapeutic exercise is planned, progressive movement prescribed to treat a specific problem: pain, stiffness, weakness or poor balance. It is not a gym workout. Every exercise is chosen for a reason, dosed like a medicine, and progressed as your body adapts. At Modern Physio in Vaishali Nagar, Jaipur, Dr. Surabhi Bansal (BPT, MPT Ortho, 14+ years of experience) designs each programme around your assessment findings, not a printed sheet handed to everyone.

Exercise therapy is the backbone of modern physiotherapy because it is the treatment with the strongest evidence base across the widest range of conditions: chronic back pain, knee and hip arthritis, shoulder problems, sports injuries and recovery after surgery. Hands-on treatment and machines can ease symptoms, but lasting change in strength, mobility and confidence comes from graded movement done consistently.

A typical programme blends several strands: range-of-motion work to restore joint movement, graded loading to rebuild tissue tolerance, strengthening and core stability for support and control, balance and proprioception training to reduce falls and re-injury risk, and, for athletes, sport-specific conditioning before return to play. Everything is anchored by a home exercise programme, because what you do between sessions matters as much as the sessions themselves.

Who This Helps

Exercise therapy suits almost anyone with a musculoskeletal problem: office workers in Jaipur with back or neck pain from long sitting hours, people with knee or hip osteoarthritis who want to stay active and delay or avoid surgery, and patients recovering after fracture, ligament injury or joint replacement.

It is equally valuable for sportspeople rebuilding strength and confidence after injury, older adults who have started to feel unsteady or have fallen, people with osteoporosis who need safe bone-loading exercise, and anyone whose posture-related pain keeps returning despite massage or medicines.

If you have searched for an "exercise doctor in Jaipur" or "physio exercises" for your condition, this is the service to start with. Dr. Surabhi Bansal will examine you first and then decide which exercises are appropriate, at what dose, and what should wait until later.

What a Session Looks Like

  1. 1

History and assessment: Dr. Surabhi Bansal takes your history, reviews any reports or scans you bring, and examines your movement, strength, balance and joint range to find what is actually driving the problem.

  2. 2

Goal setting: together you agree on concrete goals(climbing stairs without knee pain, sitting through a work day, returning to cricket or gym training) so progress can be measured, not guessed.

  3. 3

Baseline testing: simple measures such as joint range, repetition counts or single-leg balance time are recorded so improvement can be tracked at reassessment.

  4. 4

Supervised exercise: you learn each exercise with the physiotherapist watching and correcting technique. Form comes first; load and repetitions are added only when the movement is right.

  5. 5

Progression and grading: across visits, exercises are progressed(more load, more range, less support, more challenging balance) at a pace your tissues tolerate without flaring symptoms.

  6. 6

Home programme: you leave with a short, realistic home exercise plan (usually 15–25 minutes) with clear instructions on sets, repetitions and what mild soreness is acceptable.

  7. 7

Reassessment: at planned intervals your baseline measures are retested, the programme is updated, and the plan for tapering clinic visits is discussed.

Safety & Contraindications

This treatment is not suitable for everyone. Tell your physiotherapist about your full medical history: it is screened for at your first assessment.

  • Unexplained severe pain, night pain or recent significant trauma: these need medical assessment before loading exercise begins.
  • Acute fracture or suspected fracture in the area to be exercised, until cleared by your doctor.
  • Active infection, fever or acute inflammatory flare (for example a hot, swollen joint): exercise is deferred or modified until it settles.
  • Unstable heart disease, uncontrolled blood pressure or recent cardiac event: exercise needs medical clearance and careful dosing.
  • Red-flag symptoms with back pain, such as new numbness in the saddle area or changes in bladder or bowel control, require urgent medical referral, not exercise.
  • Recent surgery: exercise is not contraindicated, but it must follow the operating surgeon’s protocol and stage of healing.

Expected Timeline

Exercise therapy works on the timescale of tissue adaptation, not overnight relief. Many patients notice they move more freely and trust the painful area more within the first two to three weeks. Measurable strength change typically takes six to eight weeks of consistent training, because muscles and tendons adapt gradually. Your physiotherapist will explain what is realistic for your specific condition at the first visit.

Expect a formal reassessment roughly every two to three weeks. If objective measures(range, strength, balance times, pain with defined tasks) are improving, the programme is progressed. If they are not, the diagnosis and plan are revisited rather than repeating the same exercises indefinitely. Mild, short-lived muscle soreness after sessions is normal; sharp or lasting pain is a signal to adjust the dose, and you are encouraged to report it.

For long-standing problems such as arthritis or recurrent back pain, the aim is to make you independent: clinic visits taper off while your home or gym programme continues. Most people do not need physiotherapy forever: they need a well-built programme, the technique to do it safely, and a review point if symptoms change.

Evidence Base

NICE recommends a group or individual exercise programme as a core treatment for low back pain with or without sciatica, taking the person’s needs and preferences into account.

NICE guideline NG59 (low back pain and sciatica)

NICE recommends therapeutic exercise tailored to the individual, including local muscle strengthening and general aerobic fitness, as a core treatment for osteoarthritis.

NICE guideline NG226 (osteoarthritis in over 16s)

A Cochrane review of 249 trials found exercise therapy probably reduces pain and improves function in chronic low back pain compared with no treatment or usual care.

Cochrane review: Exercise therapy for chronic low back pain (Hayden et al., 2021)

A Cochrane review found well-designed exercise programmes, particularly balance and functional training, reduce the rate of falls in older people living in the community.

Cochrane review: Exercise for preventing falls in older people (Sherrington et al., 2019)

The WHO recommends regular strengthening and aerobic activity for adults, with balance training for older adults, for health and fall prevention: goals a supervised programme helps you reach safely.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between exercise therapy and going to the gym?

A gym programme aims at general fitness; exercise therapy treats a diagnosed problem. Exercises are selected after a clinical examination, dosed to your tissue tolerance and stage of healing, and progressed against measured baselines. The supervision matters too: technique faults that are harmless in a healthy gym-goer can aggravate an injured joint or tendon.

Should I see a doctor or a physiotherapist for exercises?

For most muscle and joint problems you can come directly to a physiotherapist. Dr. Surabhi Bansal holds BPT and MPT (Ortho) degrees and screens every patient for signs that need a medical or surgical opinion first, if she finds any, she will refer you before starting treatment. If you are already under an orthopaedic surgeon or physician, exercise therapy runs alongside their plan, not instead of it.

Will exercise make my pain worse?

A correctly dosed programme should not flare your pain. Mild muscle soreness for a day after new exercises is normal and settles. Graded loading deliberately starts below your irritation threshold and builds up, and your feedback between sessions is used to adjust the dose. Sharp or persistent worsening is a signal to modify the programme, and you should report it.

I have knee arthritis. Is exercise safe, or will it wear the joint out faster?

Appropriate exercise is safe in osteoarthritis and is recommended by NICE as a core treatment. Strengthening the muscles around the joint typically reduces pain and improves function over weeks; it does not accelerate joint damage. The key is correct selection and gradual progression, which is exactly what a supervised programme provides.

How many sessions will I need at the clinic?

It varies with the condition, how long you have had it, and how quickly you progress. Many patients attend more frequently for the first two to three weeks while the programme is built and technique is learned, then taper to weekly or fortnightly reviews. The aim is always to make you independent with a home programme, with reassessment points agreed in advance.

Do I have to do exercises at home as well?

Yes: the home programme is where most of the adaptation happens. Clinic sessions teach, correct and progress the exercises; the repeated practice between visits builds the strength and mobility. We keep home programmes short and realistic, usually 15 to 25 minutes, and adjust them if your work schedule or symptoms change.

Can exercise therapy help me avoid surgery?

For several conditions(including knee osteoarthritis, many rotator cuff problems and most back pain) a proper trial of exercise-based treatment is recommended before considering surgery. Some patients improve enough that surgery is no longer needed; others proceed to surgery stronger and better prepared. No honest clinician can promise you will avoid an operation, but a structured trial gives you a genuine choice.

I am an athlete. Do you do sport-specific rehabilitation?

Yes. After the basic strength and range milestones are met, programmes progress to running, jumping, agility, and sport-specific drills relevant to your game, with objective criteria(strength symmetry, hop tests, confidence measures) guiding return to play rather than the calendar alone.

What are the clinic timings and charges for exercise therapy in Jaipur?

Modern Physio is open Monday to Saturday, 8 am to 1 pm and 4 pm to 8 pm, and Sunday mornings 8 am to 1 pm, at Vaishali Nagar, Jaipur. Fees depend on the assessment and the programme you need, so please call or WhatsApp +91 82334 02489 for current charges and to book a convenient slot.

I’ve been seeing Dr. Surbhi for treatment of severe cervical pain, and she’s been wonderful. She’s a very experienced psychotherapist who genuinely gives her best for every patient. My brother recommended her after his own successful treatment with her, and I’m so glad I listened. I also brought my son to her for his knocking knees issue. She treated him with great care and taught him some really helpful exercises that made a noticeable difference. Dr. Surbhi truly cares about her patients’ well-being, and I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a skilled and dedicated therapist.

If you’re someone struggling with pain that cant seem to be resolved no matter what you do or which doctor you consult, i would strongly recommend that you visit Dr. Bansal. Some qualities that i really valued during my interactions with her:- - She is very patient and listens to everything you have to say before recommending anything. - She will recommend adequate tests and validate her prognosis through those tests. - During the course of therapy, she will take feedback and incorporate those in her approach. - As someone who runs regularly i was concerned that she would tell me to stop completely, she validated my concern and told me that the goal of the therapy is to be able to return to the same quality of life inspite of the injury and that i can restart running in a few months. As someone who was tired of doctors prescribing medicines before identifying the cause of my pain, i highly recommend that you consult her if you’re in pain. I can’t thank her enough!!

I had a lot of back pain after delivery, I thought it would be common, everyone says it happens. 2 months have passed and nothing has improved. When I went to Dr. Surabhi at Modern Physio Jaipur, I found out that the pelvic floor and core muscles had become very weak after delivery, which was putting pressure on the back. She specifically gave me exercises for postpartum recovery. There was so much difference in one month that I am amazed. New moms in Jaipur: please don't ignore postpartum pain, get it checked.

Chronic lower back pain for almost 2 years, tried everything including medicines, oils, even random YouTube exercises. Honestly went to Modern Physio Jaipur with very low expectations, thinking this too would give temporary relief. Dr Surabhi madam assessed and clearly said that if the root cause is addressed then permanent improvement is possible. Gave a structured plan of 6 weeks. Today it has been 4 months, the sessions are over, the pain has not returned. Physiotherapy actually works long term if the right physiotherapist is found.

Dr Surbhi is one of the best Physiotherapist available in Jaipur. She is one of those professionals who know their job very well. I had visited other physiotherapist too but to no avail. Dr Surbhi with her intimate knowledge and professional approach has treated my lower back pain very effectively. One of the rare Doctor who listens patiently to the problem of the patient and guides the patient to full recovery using both machine and home based exercise therapy. Her treatment is focused on repair and recovery from injury and not towards short term quick relief stop gap measure. Thanks to her I am finally relieved from my long term back pain.

I come from Raja Park and was suffering from severe lower back pain. The doctor diagnosed me with a disc bulge. While searching on Google, I came across Modern Physio and decided to take an appointment. I have been coming here for almost one month now and my condition has improved significantly. Along with back pain, I was also experiencing heaviness and discomfort in my leg, which has reduced a lot. Dr. Surabhi has started stretching and strengthening exercises for me, and electrotherapy is also being given alongside. I am feeling much better now. I would highly recommend Modern Physio for back pain and slip disc patients across Jaipur. It is absolutely worth traveling such a long distance for treatment.
