Hip Pain Symptoms

  • Pain in the hip, groin, outer thigh or buttocks
  • Stiffness or limited range of motion
  • Pain that worsens with activity or prolonged sitting
  • Difficulty walking, climbing stairs or squatting
  • Clicking, locking or catching sensation in the hip

What Causes Hip Pain?

Hip pain can originate from various structures within or around the hip joint, including bones, cartilage, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bursae (fluid-filled sacs that reduce friction). The hip is a ball-and-socket joint designed for both mobility and stability, making it vulnerable to multiple conditions.

Hip pain affects people of all ages and activity levels. Active individuals may experience pain from overuse injuries or sports-related trauma, while older adults commonly develop degenerative conditions like osteoarthritis. Pain can also be referred from the lower back, mimicking hip problems.

Common Types of Hip Pain

  • Osteoarthritis: Age-related wear and tear of the hip joint cartilage, causing pain, stiffness, and reduced movement
  • Hip Bursitis: Inflammation of the bursae, especially the trochanteric bursa on the outside of the hip, resulting in pain when walking or lying on the affected side
  • Labral Tears: Damage to the labrum (cartilage ring that helps secure the ball within the socket), often causing sharp pain and catching sensations
  • Tendinitis: Inflammation of the tendons that connect muscles to the hip bone, typically from overuse
  • Hip Impingement (FAI): Abnormal contact between the ball and socket, which can damage the joint and cause pain during specific movements
  • Snapping Hip Syndrome: A tendon sliding over the bony prominence causing a snapping sensation, sometimes with pain
  • Muscle Strains: Overuse or injury to muscles surrounding the hip joint, especially in athletes

Risk Factors for Hip Pain

  • Age (especially for arthritic conditions)
  • Previous injury to the hip
  • Regular high-impact activities or sports
  • Occupations requiring heavy lifting or prolonged standing
  • Repetitive movements that stress the hip joint
  • Obesity, which increases pressure on weight-bearing joints
  • Anatomical abnormalities in the hip structure
  • Muscle imbalances or weakness in the core, hips or legs

When to Seek Professional Help

You should consult with a physiotherapist if your hip pain:

  • Persists for more than 1-2 weeks despite rest
  • Is severe or getting progressively worse
  • Limits your ability to walk, work, or sleep
  • Followed a fall or injury to the hip region
  • Comes with swelling, redness, or warmth around the hip
  • Associated with fever or unexplained weight loss

Did You Know?

  • The hip joint is one of the most stable joints in the body, yet it allows for impressive range of motion in multiple directions.

  • Weak gluteal muscles are a common contributing factor to many hip problems, even in athletic individuals.

  • Many patients with hip osteoarthritis can significantly delay or avoid surgery with proper physiotherapy and lifestyle modifications.
