Osgood-Schlatter disease is pain and swelling just below the kneecap, where the tendon attaches to a growth area on the shin bone. It occurs in growing children and adolescents, typically those playing a lot of sport, during a growth spurt when bones lengthen faster than muscles adapt. The name sounds alarming and the word "disease" is misleading — it is a self-limiting condition of growth rather than a disease process, and it settles once growth completes. That does not mean nothing should be done: sensible load management and strengthening let most young athletes keep playing while it runs its course, instead of stopping sport for months.
Common Symptoms
- Pain and tenderness just below the kneecap, over a bony bump on the shin
- A visible or palpable lump at that point
- Pain that worsens with running, jumping and stairs
- Pain that eases with rest and returns on resuming sport
- Swelling over the painful area
- Discomfort kneeling
- Often affecting both knees, though usually one more than the other

Does my child have to stop playing sport?
Usually not entirely. Most young athletes manage with adjusted training volume, strengthening and flexibility work. Complete rest often makes the return harder, because the muscles deconditioned in the meantime.
Will the lump go away?
The bony bump often remains permanently, but it is usually painless once growth completes. Its presence afterwards is not a problem.
How long does it last?
It typically settles as skeletal growth finishes, which can mean months rather than weeks, with symptoms fluctuating in the meantime. Management is about keeping your child playing comfortably through that period.
Is it causing lasting damage?
It is a self-limiting condition of the growth area rather than a damaging process. Pain that is severe, present at rest or at night, or accompanied by systemic symptoms is a different picture and needs medical assessment.
Do knee straps help?
Some young athletes find a patellar strap reduces symptoms during activity. It is worth trialling, but it manages symptoms rather than addressing the load and strength issues underneath.
