Kinesio / Rigid Taping & Strapping

Specialized taping techniques that provide support, reduce pain, and improve movement patterns without restricting range of motion.

Physiotherapist applying kinesiology tape to a patient's shoulder

How Does It Work?

Therapeutic taping works through different mechanisms depending on the type of tape and technique used. Kinesiology tape is elastic and mimics the properties of human skin, while rigid athletic tape provides firm support and stability.

Kinesiology tape lifts the skin microscopically, creating space between the skin and underlying tissues. This decompression helps improve circulation, reduces pressure on pain receptors, and enhances lymphatic drainage to reduce swelling.

When applied with specific tension and direction, these tapes can provide proprioceptive feedback to muscles, encouraging proper movement patterns and posture correction throughout daily activities.

Rigid taping and strapping techniques, on the other hand, work by limiting harmful movements while allowing functional movement, protecting injured structures and preventing further injury during the healing process.

Assessment of your condition and movement patterns to determine appropriate taping technique

2

Skin preparation (cleaning and sometimes shaving to improve adhesion)

3

Application of the appropriate tape with specific tension and direction based on therapeutic goals

4

Education on how long to wear the tape (typically 3-5 days for kinesiology tape)

Instructions on tape removal and skin care

6

Guidance on complementary exercises and activities

7

Taping sessions typically take 15-20 minutes within a standard physiotherapy appointment

8

Follow-up sessions to assess effectiveness and modify technique as needed

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can I wear kinesiology tape?

Kinesiology tape is designed to be worn for 3-5 days, depending on the application site and activity level. The adhesive is water-resistant, allowing you to shower with it on. However, if you experience any skin irritation, redness, or itching, you should remove the tape immediately.

Is there a difference between colored tapes?

Functionally, different colored kinesiology tapes work the same way. The color differences were originally based on Eastern medicine theories, but modern research hasn't found significant differences in effectiveness between colors. Color choice can be personal preference or based on visibility with certain skin tones or clothing.

Can I apply kinesiology tape myself?

While self-application is possible for some basic techniques, proper therapeutic taping requires knowledge of anatomy, biomechanics, and specific application techniques. We recommend learning proper application from your physiotherapist first. For maintenance of a successful taping technique, we can teach you how to apply it yourself for certain conditions.

Will taping fix my problem completely?

Taping is generally considered a complementary treatment rather than a complete solution. It works best as part of a comprehensive treatment plan that includes appropriate exercises, activity modifications, and addressing the underlying causes of your condition. Taping provides support and pain relief while you work on long-term solutions.

How do I remove the tape without hurting my skin?

The best way to remove kinesiology tape is to apply oil (baby oil, olive oil, or coconut oil) along the edges of the tape and let it soak in for a few minutes. Then slowly peel the tape in the direction of hair growth while supporting the skin beneath. Alternatively, removing it after a shower when the skin is warm can make the process more comfortable.
