Strains range from a mild overstretch involving only a few fibres, through partial tears that produce noticeable weakness, to a complete rupture in which the muscle can no longer transmit force. How long does a pulled muscle take to heal?
It depends on which muscle is involved and how much of it is torn. A mild strain involving only a few fibres often settles within a couple of weeks, while a substantial partial tear can take considerably longer before the muscle tolerates full effort. Severe tears may take several months and sometimes need a surgical opinion. Rather than predicting a date, we grade your injury at assessment and progress you through defined milestones, which gives a far more reliable picture of where you actually are.
Should I use ice or heat for a muscle strain?
In the first two to three days, cold and gentle compression are generally more comfortable and help you manage the swelling and soreness of the acute phase. Once the initial swelling settles and the area feels stiff rather than hot, heat before exercise often helps the muscle move more comfortably. Neither one speeds up tissue healing on its own, so treat them as comfort measures that make it easier to do the loading exercises that genuinely drive recovery.
Can I keep training while my strain heals?
Usually yes, with modification. We rarely recommend complete rest beyond the first few days, because prolonged inactivity weakens the healing tissue and the surrounding muscle. Your physiotherapist will identify what you can do without stressing the injury, which may mean training the opposite limb, working the upper body, or using low-impact cardiovascular exercise. What matters is that the injured muscle is loaded deliberately and progressively rather than accidentally.
Why do my muscle strains keep coming back in the same place?
Recurrent strains almost always trace back to rehabilitation that stopped when the pain stopped. Healed muscle needs eccentric strength, length under load and good coordination before it can handle sprinting or heavy lifting again, and those qualities return more slowly than comfort does. Underlying factors such as hip or core weakness, a strength imbalance between muscle groups, or a training load that rises too quickly also make a repeat injury more likely. How is a muscle strain different from a muscle cramp or delayed soreness?
A cramp is a sudden involuntary contraction that releases within minutes and leaves the muscle tender but structurally intact. Delayed onset muscle soreness builds over a day or two after unaccustomed exercise, feels generalised across the whole muscle, and eases with light activity. A strain is different: there is usually a distinct moment of injury, the pain stays in one specific spot, and the muscle is weaker when tested. When should I see a doctor rather than a physiotherapist for a pulled muscle?
See a doctor promptly if you felt or heard a pop and cannot bear weight or use the limb at all, if there is a visible gap or a bunched lump in the muscle, if bruising is severe and spreading rapidly, or if the calf becomes swollen, hot and painful without a clear injury. These features may indicate a complete tear or another condition that needs medical assessment and imaging.
